Alison Ficek

"Having been through DRESS, I know how isolating it can be. No one should have to walk through it alone."

Alison lives in Minnesota and is a former healthcare worker who served as a registered nurse. She has a passion for research and education, and is also a survivor of DRESS syndrome.

In late 2022, Alison was diagnosed with DRESS due to Bactrim. Her symptoms began within two weeks of starting the antibiotic and included high fevers, facial swelling, and a full-body rash. By the time she received her diagnosis, her liver had also been affected.

Alison's treatment for DRESS included high-dose steroids (oral prednisone) and topical ointments. Her care involved regular monitoring of blood tests, biopsies, and an echocardiogram as part of her ongoing assessment. Full recovery for Alison took 10 months of steroid treatment and diligent follow-up with her healthcare providers. Her dermatologist played a primary role in managing her steroid therapy.

Having DRESS was a life-altering event for Alison, leading to significant changes. Her experience inspired her to educate the patient and medical communities, a role she is well suited for given her personal journey and professional nursing background. Alison believes that patients are their own best advocates and finds it deeply rewarding to support others.
